“Métiers d’Art — La symbolique des Laques” wristwatch, round, in 18K rose gold, double dial in 18K gold covered with Japanese maki-e lacquer with nightingale and plum tree flower motifs, openworked in the center revealing the skeleton movement. Rose gold hands. Alligator strap with 18K rose gold pin buckle.

• The Métiers d’Art “La Symbolique des Laques” collection expresses the Maison’s attachment to various forms of art and culture – in this instance the traditional Japanese art of “maki-e”, which consists of sprinkling a pattern drawn with gold or silver powder on a black-lacquered background.

• This collection stems from exclusive collaboration between Vacheron Constantin and the house of Zohiko in Kyoto (Japan), whose origins date back to 1661! Vacheron Constantin therefore called upon the master lacquerers of Zohiko to create watch dials adorned with traditional motifs characteristic of the art of Japanese lacquer and maki-e. Vacheron
Constantin then demonstrated its mastery of ultra-thin movements and the art of skeletonisation by revealing in the dial centre Calibre 1003SQ, a veritable lacework of meticulously chamfered metal featuring superlative finishing. Finally, the watches in this collection are “double-sided”, with both the delicate motif and the skeletonised movement visible from the
front and back of the case.

• Launched in 2010, the Vacheron Constantin Métiers d’Art “La Symbolique des Laques” collection is a limited series of 20 timepieces for each theme drawn from traditional Japanese motifs, of which three were offered each year for a total of three years.

When creating works of art such as Métiers d’art Collections, our Maison is always concerned to document the work of the craftsmen and watchmakers.

These making-of photographs testify to this commitment.
