Manufacturing Year 2010

Wristwatch — Métiers d’Art Opéra Garnier watch, automatic, 18K yellow gold 3N, miniature “Grand Feu” enamel dial which reproduces the Opéra Garnier ceiling painted by Chagall, Mississippiensis alligator strap, 18K yellow gold 3N pin buckle.

• In 1964, André Malraux, the then French Minister of State for Cultural Affairs, asked Marc Chagall to paint a new ceiling at the Opéra Garnier in Paris. The project was extensive, with 220m2 of ceiling to decorate. Each element of the work pays homage to Verdi, Beethoven, Bizet, Gluck, Berlioz, Wagner, Debussy, Rameau, Stravinsky, Ravel, Tchaikovsky and their major works such as Romeo and Juliet, Tristan and Isolde, The Firebird, Daphnis and Chloe, Adam, Swan Lake, Giselle, Boris Godunov, The Magic Flute…

• In 2010, Anita Porchet, an expert in the art of miniature enameling, created a unique masterpiece for the Maison: a watch that perfectly reproduced the ceiling of the Opéra Garnier by Marc Chagall. This is the first time that Chagall’s work has been reproduced in such a small format. It was an opportunity for Vacheron Constantin to pay tribute to the illustrious composers and their works that are represented there.

• The circumference of the dial is decorated with twelve nymphs reproduced from the Second Empire gildings of the Palais Garnier, all unique and hand-engraved. They are found at the same level as the enameled dial. The nymphs personify the hours and add a unique relief to this piece, which itself is also unique.

When creating works of art such as Métiers d’art Collections, our Maison is always concerned to document the work of the craftsmen and watchmakers.

These making-of photographs testify to this commitment.
