Ref.11886

Manufacturing Year 1931

Pocket watch known as “bras en l’air”, 18K white and yellow gold, round. Satin silver dial, appliqué in the center which depicts an Indian magician in engraved and enameled gilded nickel silver, indicating the hours and minutes with his arms.

• From 19th century pocket watches with jumping hours to present day creations, the Manufacture is well-known for mastering the creativity of time reading. A system known as “retrograde” that appeared at the end of the 18th century soon made its appearance in pocket watches. The retrograde function is defined by the motion of a hand on a scale which
draws the arc of a circle before instantly returning to its initial position to start the movement again. This incessant ballet of hands allows for the creation of dials that are both original and spectacular.

• In 1929, Vacheron Constantin developed its first “bras en l’air” movement for a pocket watch, whose case was manufactured by its Parisian partner Verger Frères. At the height of the Art Deco period, these watches would soon become sought-after by well-established jewelers looking to diversify their wares, as watches were increasingly being considered as jewelry pieces and fashion accessories. Thus, these watches entirely adopt the aesthetic codes of the era: the oval ring, a
case made of two types of gold, various animated dials.

As of 1929, our Maison developed its first «arms up» movements. The creation of the figurines originated from the parisian workshop Verger Frères.
